We are happy to announce that Castle Warriors was nominated for 'Excellence in Design' at the International Mobile Gaming Awards. The final judging session will be on February 14th (can you feel the love?), but public voting for the People's Choice Award starts today. So fire up your browsers, and may the best game win.
Happy New Year!
As 2009 comes to an end, we want to thank our community and friends for all their support. It has been quite an exciting year and we are working hard to make 2010 even more interesting.
Looking Back
No New Years post would be complete without a retrospective, so let's have a quick look at what happened in GameResort's first full year…
Downhill Bowling®
The iPhone version of our popular web game was our first commercial release. After some great reviews, sales really started picking up when we added a free 'lite' version. The game was also featured on the iTunes App Store, for which we are very grateful.
Highlights include reaching top spots in Germany and Japan, and making the ilounge.com 'Top 100 iPhone Games of 2009' list.
Biplane - Wings of Raccoon
Trying out a different genre, Biplane was our second stab at an iPhone game. While we were pretty happy with the initial game, we used players feedback to improve the device calibration and threw in a new level with bigger missiles for good measure.
Highlights include making the US top 100 list and seeing the game on display at Unity's GDC booth.
Flip Cup
While not a resounding commercial success, we definitely had fun working on this. It is as much a physics toy as a game, it is meant to distract for a few minutes at the time. We have also released a web version, which is especially fun to play using a pressure sensitive graphics tablet.
Castle Warriors
Learning from previous projects, this has been our most ambitious production to date. It is also the first time we spent a lot of effort creating a proper promo video, which really helped make it stand out in a sea of new games on release day. Highlights include #1 all apps in Russia and making the US top 100 despite the flood of apps (over 1300) hitting the store on the same day.
Website
Our website has gone live and has already been completely updated once… expect it to evolve further as we bring more games and functionality to your browser.
Looking Forward
Our next title is going to be a short production and it will be released as a free, ad supported game. It is a bit of a test project and your feedback will be much appreciated once it is released. More on this soon…
Let us wrap this up with a 'just one more thing' moment. Our big title for 2010 is going to be a sequel to Downhill Bowling®. It is going to be groovy.
For the latest updates and announcements, please keep an eye on this space or follow us on Twitter or Facebook.
We just found out today that Downhill Bowling made the iLounge.com Top 100 iPhone Games of 2009 list, as published in their fancy 2010 iPod + iPhone Buyer's Guide.
If you haven't played the game yet, please make sure to check out the free 'lite' version. Thanks!
We just came back from a great week in San Francisco attending Unite09, the annual Unity conference. The sessions were informative and it was great to finally meet so many other developers in person! As you can tell from our pictures, the Californian weather was great, too.
However, it is now time to get back to work... there are games to be made.
Based on your feedback, we just submitted an update for Castle Warriors. It includes:
* Quick Play (Skirmish) mode: create your own battles on any unlocked map by selecting number of troops and days.
* Streamlined troop selection UI.
* Adjusted castle selection (less likely to accidentally select the wrong castle).
* Scroll sensitivity adjustment option.
* Bug fixes.
The first week has been pretty amazing for Castle Warriors. It first hit #1 strategy game in Italy, and then #1 app in Russia. Things went a bit downhill after we ended the launch sale, but we are still thrilled to have gotten so much initial recognition. Overall, feedback has been very positive and we are working on an update which should be submitted soon.
In the meantime, here are some quotes from your favorite review sites:
"The game is pretty addicting and highly enjoyable." -appsmile.com
The last 24h have been quite a ride. First, Castle Warriors got approved last night... after reading about the delays and rejections other developers were experiencing, we were thrilled and positively surprised with the 10 days no hassle approval process. We were also excited that the game would (for once) come out at the top of the 'new release' list and get some decent exposure on its first day. We quickly finished all our website assets and PR text, and looked forward to a hectic morning to announce our latest game to the world.
This morning, armed with fresh fruit juice and granola sharpened teeth, we jumped on our computers ready to announce our joy to the world, when we saw... nothing. Our game was not visible in the App Store yet and the iTunes link was not working. Bummer. We impatiently waited for a few more hours and suddenly felt the shadow of a giant wave lurking over our shoulders. Paddle!
Well, we noticed that no other new games were showing up in the new release section and then caught Arnold Kim's twitter saying "another one of those massive release nights for app store. ton of games games just came out.". Uh oh....
So there we are, paddling out trying to catch the wave rather than being crushed and drowned by a deluge of great new games, refreshing iTunes and checking the app link every few minutes until it finally worked and we could tell everybody that "hey, our new game is out, too". It was a fun ride, actually, really appreciated the re-twitters, and making the front page of TouchArcade with our promo video was definitely a glorious moment.
Now, tomorrow is going to be interesting as no new apps have made their way to the 'new games' section yet, and Castle Warriors will undoubtedly be buried on page 3 when they do. But tomorrow is another day, and we'll try to catch another wave. And if there aren't any waves, we'll just go fishing. Ah, life at the GameResort...

Yes! We submitted Castle Warriors to the App Store today... hopefully it will be available soon. It will launch at a special low $0.99, but we reserve the right to adjust the price at any time, so you'll have to get it before we change our minds :-)
Queen Mynera rules a lovely land threatened by despicable foes. Of course, you are her only hope. Castle Warriors is a tensely fought, tightly paced RTS game set in a landscape that gently tweaks all those fantasy tropes from the games of yore. Lead armies of warriors, veterans, warlords, heroes and even giants, against goblins, orcs, ogres, trolls and demons. You must take and defend castles, use superior strategy and tactical timing to gain advantage before claiming victory.
You must Creep on the Borderlands, defend Waterseep, and find the Temple of Elemental Good. And what possible trouble could a few missing magic items be? Hmmmm…
FEATURES
You might have seen it floating around the forums already, if not, check it out now! This is the trailer for our upcoming iPhone game called 'Castle Warriors'. The game is very, very close to completion and certainly our most ambitious project so far.
